Dear Steeler Family,
It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of our beloved High School History Teacher, Mr. Joseph DeCecco. Mr. DeCecco was not only a dedicated educator for 23 years at Lackawanna City School District, but also a cherished friend, mentor, and colleague to many in our school community. His passion for teaching and his unwavering commitment to our students have left an indelible mark on all of us.
We understand that this news is difficult to process, and our hearts go out to Mr. DeCecco's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Joe's impact extended far beyond the classroom, and his presence will be deeply missed by everyone in our school community.
In times of sorrow, it is important for us to come together and support one another. Starting Monday morning, our support team, including counselors and staff, will be available to provide emotional support to students and staff who may need it.
Please encourage your children to express their feelings and reach out if they need to talk. Our community is strong, and we will navigate this challenging time together. If you or your child need additional support or if you are aware of someone who is struggling, please do not hesitate to contact his/her school principal.
Mr. DeCecco often reminded us to do "Whatever it Takes," and in his honor, we will do just that to support our community through this difficult time. Let us show each other grace, love, and kindness as we remember him and the incredible impact he had on our lives.
With heartfelt condolences,
Nadia A. Nashir, Superintendent
