Adding mixed numbers can be a challenging concept for 4th-grade students. Mixed numbers include both whole numbers and fractions, requiring students to understand fraction operations as well as whole-number arithmetic. By developing clear strategies, students can confidently approach these problems. This week, Mrs. Godzich's 4th grade mathematicians are exploring how to use visual models and number lines to add mixed numbers.

Students drew fraction circles to represent each mixed number. They also drew an open number line, identifying the fractional parts. You can practice adding mixed numbers in the real world when using food. You can add ingredients in a recipe, ask questions when grocery shopping, or cut fruit into fractional parts. Be sure to ask your child to explain their thinking out loud as they problem solve!
