Healthy students learn better! Last week, several teachers and staff from the Lackawanna City School District attended the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Annual School Wellness Conference, bringing together educators from other districts and community partners from Western New York to share and explore innovative wellness strategies that create healthier school environments.
Martin Road Elementary presented: Building a Culture of Wellness: Initiatives for a Healthier School Community. Topics included organizing engaging Wellness Week and Wellness Night events, developing a comprehensive building recess plan and reimagining birthday celebrations, which all foster a supportive environment for students, staff and families.
The Lackawanna Middle School highlighted wellness initiatives and projects that are supported by the CHSC grant, including the LMS Harbor Room and free clothing closet, events and raffles promoting physical activity, outdoor learning courtyard project and the implementation of flexible seating and yoga in the classroom. Additionally, they discussed the valuable insights gained from students and staff surveys.
The sessions featured a diverse range of presentations on topics including indoor gardening, SNAP-Ed tools, classroom physical activity, health literacy, staff wellness tips and the Farm to School movement. Thank you CHSC for supporting Lackawanna schools and for the opportunity to hear from local schools and organizations about their innovative wellness initiatives that create healthier schools.
