Our third-grade mathematicians are exploring patterns this week. A pattern is a series of numbers or shapes that follow a rule to repeat or change. Students in Ms. Prell and Ms. O'Connor's class used manipulatives to create odd and even patterns.
You can review how to make patterns at home by using a hundred chart and crayons. Have your child lightly color 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25. Together, look for and describe patterns you see in the numbers that are colored. Ask your child what the rule is for coloring the next number red and then use that rule to tell what the next number in the pattern will be. Have your child color all the numbers in this pattern red.
This exercise is a fun way to reinforce learning at home and help your student study!
