Students at workStudents in Mrs. Kwiatkowski's fifth-grade Math classes at Martin Road Elementary School took a trip to the Decimal Diner.

In this activity, students were tasked with reading various dinner menus from local restaurants and planning a dinner outing for their family. First, the students had to estimate the cost of the entire dinner for their family. Next, students selected an appetizer, a main meal, and a dessert option from their selected menu. Students calculated the actual cost of the entire meal and then compared that to their estimate.

Students were further challenged with extension activities that included calculating a 20% gratuity for their server, recalculating their actual cost after applying a discount, and writing a reflection based upon their interaction with this activity. This engaging activity allowed students to demonstrate their understanding of how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals while applying those skills to a real-world scenario.
