Students with college swagIt is never too early to start thinking about college. What interests you? What do you want to study? What career do you want for yourself?

Those were the questions that students in Mrs. Kwiatkowski's and Mrs. McDonald's RtI classes were challenged to answer.

First, the students thought about what career they would be interested in pursuing after graduating from high school. Next, the students researched colleges that provided training or degrees for their specific career path. Finally, the students wrote persuasive letters to the Admissions Office of their selected college, detailing the career they have chosen, why they chose to attend that college, and kindly asked for a pennant or poster that could be hung in the classroom and serve as a daily reminder of the importance of secondary education.

Students wrote to a wide variety of colleges and trade schools across the United States that included Duke University, University at Buffalo, Harvard University, and the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

Excitement grew among the students with each package that was delivered to Martin Road. In addition to receiving the requested pennants and posters, some students received hand-written letters from the college's admissions counselor or sets of pens and stickers to share with their classmates.

One local college, Hilbert College, truly went above and beyond to provide a memorable experience for our students! Antonio Acevedo wrote to Hilbert College with the dream of becoming a police officer. William Morton, Admissions Counselor, arranged a visit to Martin Road. Mr. Morton invited NYS Trooper Pierce and his K-9 KD to discuss a career in law enforcement. Trooper Pierce explained the requirements for his career and then provided a K-9 demonstration that involved tracking and detection.

This project was truly a rewarding experience for the students. It is our sincere hope that this project will promote career awareness and foster a mindset where students can see the connection between school and the real world and that any long-term goal is attainable with determination and motivation!
