Liz, Chris, and the staff from Busy Beaver Lawn & Garden donated their time, services, and all the necessary materials to work with the students from start to finish on the new design scheme of the courtyard. The students worked tremendously hard on this project. They dug out a pathway to connect both sets of flowerboxes, hauled away sod and wheeled in fresh dirt for the pathway and flowerboxes, selected and planted the flowers, and topped off the entire area with fresh mulch. As a finishing touch, the students placed their hand-painted rocks in the newly constructed pathway, which they created after reading the book "Only One You" by Linda Kranz.

Through this project, the students demonstrated a sense of teamwork, cooperation, and patience as well as learning the how’s and why’s of landscaping and gardening. This project was a truly rewarding experience for the students, especially as they now see teachers and their fellow classmates enjoying this space throughout the school day.

The fifth grade teachers would like to thank Mr. Mike Penz, Lackawanna Middle School teacher, for donating his time and materials earlier this year to create and install the new flowerboxes, as well as Jennifer O’Connor from the Cornell Cooperation Extension for the donation of 4 new picnic tables. Finally, a very special thank you to Busy Beaver Lawn & Garden for their generous donations. We look forward to working together on this worthwhile project in the years to come!
