The Lackawanna Middle School PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) team has again this year reduced the discipline referrals for negative behavior.
Recognition for students who exhibit positive behavior and follow the school rules and procedures are recognized with various events and rewards. Students have responded well to the initiatives instituted by PBIS and the expectancy of lowering the referral rate.
The middle school's PBIS Tier 1 team has done some incredible things this year to support students and demonstrate building-wide expectations. Last summer, the PBIS team planned specific events that excited the students. The first event took place in November. Students and teachers were able to enjoy a day of playing Hungry Human Hippo, earning prizes and watching a dance group from the afterschool program.
The second event took place in December and consisted of a holiday video in multiple classrooms. The students were able to see how the holiday was recognized and celebrated on three different continents and across many different cultures.
The next event on March 29 will consist of a dodgeball competition for all three grades. Teachers are leading teams of students who are participating. Students are extra-excited about the event and are looking forward to the competition.
