Free meals for all District students

The Lackawanna City School District has secured funding that allows every student to receive healthy breakfast and lunch meals at no charge, regardless of their household income.

Over the summer, the District applied and was approved for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This means every student who attends Lackawanna City Schools can rest easy knowing they do not have to pay for their breakfast or lunch when they go to school.

"The CEP program is a huge boost to our District as we strive to offer our students the best possible education," Lackawanna Superintendent Keith E. Lewis stated. "A nutritious and wholesome meal during the school day helps students focus on their studies and absorb information better. This funding means we can move forward knowing our students can strive for their best each and every day."

"This program is a game-changer for our students when it comes to a basic necessity," Lackawanna Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Daniel Grant pointed out. "All of our students will receive free meals, so any potential stigma related to meal status is eliminated. Students will spend less time in cashier lines. In addition, the District will save money by reducing costs associated with the application process for free and reduced meals, tracking unpaid meal balances and other administrative expenses."

Through the CEP program, the District receives federal and state meal reimbursements for all students. To ensure a student continues receiving free meals - and to ensure the free meal program can continue into the future - the District is requesting parents and guardians to complete and return a Household Income Form. Grant noted completion of this form will help the District maximize the amount of state and federal aid that it receives, thereby maximizing the resources available to students.

Questions or concerns associated with the CEP program or the Household Income Form can be addressed to the Food Service Director at 821-5610, ext. 2913.
