The recent Western New York Girls in Sports event, founded by Mary Wilson and hosted by the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, Girl Scouts of WNY and Buffalo Public Schools, is held twice a year for nine- to 12-year-old girls in the cities of Buffalo and Lackawanna. The event is put on to generate excitement among young girls about participating in sports.

Throughout the afternoon, girls rotated to different stations to try tennis, running, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, softball and yoga. The girls also got the opportunity to meet Staci Wilson, who was defender on the 1996 U.S. Olympic gold medal soccer team.

This is the second year that Lackawanna students have been invited to the event, and 27 girls from Martin Road Elementary School and Lackawanna Middle School were able to attend.
